As is expected, the centerpiece of the Sloan's Lake neighborhood is Sloan's Lake. Sloan's Lake is actually two connected lakes, the other being Cooper Lake. The lakes together take up 177 acres, big enough to support seagulls and in winter large flocks of geese. The neighborhood is bordered by W. 29th Avenue, W. 10th Avenue, Federal Boulevard, and Sheridan Boulevard.
Most homes were build in the 1930s and 1940s making the neighborhood one of Denver's few true "pre-war" communities. In recent years, building new homes on sites formerly occupied by older homes has become so common that various zoning and permitting changes are being debated. In the meantime one is likely to find a new home in between two decades old homes. In some areas newer homes out number the original homes. The latest trend is to knock down the original house to build high-end duplexes. Although some of the area's historic charm is lost to such ventures, the neighborhood benefits from the new arrivals and their love for the area.
Though the bustling eclectic shopping area at 32nd and Lowell is technically in Highlands, its proximity to the Sloan's Lake neighborhood makes it a locals place. The major community attraction however is Sloan's Lake itself and the surrounding park. Sloan's Lake Park has not only the largest lake in the area, but tennis courts, bike paths, picnic areas, and city maintained flower gardens. The lake is host to many unique events. Once a year, the lake attracts people from far and wide for the Dragon Boat Festival, an outdoor festival with an array of booths and exhibits featuring a race on the lake in traditional Asian-style dragon boats. In summer, the park hosts many family gatherings and those who like to grill for big groups. In winter, the park is lined with the tracks of cross-country skiers who value the park's scenery and terrain. The neighborhood sports an elevated unobstructed view of the Denver skyline that is particularly impressive from inside the park.
Another key feature of the neighborhood is Saint Anthony's Hospital. Denver's major hospital facility west of I-25, St. Anthony's provides not only medical care, but a major employer in the area. Homes in the region around the hospital are popular with doctors and hospital staff.
Sloan's Lake neighborhood is a great area for those who appreciate the lake and its park, while still being within a few minutes of Downtown Denver.
