Some of the residents living in University Park call it Observatory Park. Naturally so, for there is a huge observatory sitting in, well, Observatory Park, located at South Milwaukee Street and Warren Avenue: the University of Denver Historic Chamberlain Observatory, which houses the 100-year-old, 20-inch Clark refractor telescope in a stately two-story red sandstone building built in 1898 and given to the University of Denver by H. B. Chamberlain.

Operated by the university's Department of Physics and Astronomy and designated an Historic Landmark by the City and County of Denver in 1994, the observatory, and a smaller one nearby, offers public viewing for just a dollar on Tuesday and Thursday nights.

Elegant one-story red brick homes, the occasional split-level, several towering three-story wood frame mansions and lovely Tudors grace the quiet, well-maintained streets and avenues surrounding the park, which sports swings, a slide, playground equipment and four tennis courts.

Colorado Boulevard with its multitude of stores and services is just a few minutes drive from the park and Evans Avenue is a main thoroughfare that moves traffic quickly and only backs up at rush hour at University and Colorado Boulevards.

A number of fine schools enhance the neighborhood: Accelerated Schools, Most Precious Blood School, University Park Elementary School and the University of Denver High School. The University Light Rail Station is at University Boulevard and East Buchtel Avenue.

The University Park Methodist Church, an immense, dignified red brick building hugging the corner at University Boulevard and Warren Avenue, said to be "a very welcoming church" by a church representative, has a congregation of 500 people. Several blocks east is St. Mary's Anglican Catholic Church, which Father Dwitt Treet said is a "commuter church" and serves about 200 families. The chapel is open daily to the public for prayer.

A family owned and operated neighborhood gas station, a Conoco named Weaver's Automotive, sits at Evans and Milwaukee Street. Tom Weaver, who has worked at the gas station for 20 years and owned it the past 10, is the fulltime mechanic.

"About 80 percent of our customers are from the neighborhood," he said.

If you are considering buying or selling a home in University (Observatory) Park, please give us a call.  We would be happy to help you with your real estate needs in this great neighborhood.
