Denver's historic Whittier Neighborhood stretches out northeast of Downtown Denver from 23rd Avenue up to Martin Luther King Boulevard and across from Downing St to York St where it adjoins City Park.  The neighborhood's close proximity to both downtown and City Park provide easy access to many of Denver's treasures.  For residents of the neighborhood, especially those on the eastern side, the Denver Zoo, the Museum of Science and Nature are a pleasant walk away through City Park.

In addition, the neighborhood's close proximity to Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center (Saint Luke's) and Exempla St. Joseph Hospital (Saint Joe's) make it a common living choice of those working there, particularly medical students and residents who cannot afford pricey downtown living, but want to live nearby.

Among the wealth of historic buildings Whittier's most well known feature is the commanding St. Ignatius Loyola Church which sits on the corner of 23rd and York Street.  The church's impressive gothic style double towers and distinctive red color make it an easy point of reference for many Denver natives and long-time residents.

Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the early 20th century as Denver outgrew the downtown area and residents put down roots westward.  As a result, many homes in the area take on architectural designs popular at the time, most notably the Queen Anne style.  The neighborhood is predominantly single-family homes although some of the area's mansions have been converted to multi-family dwellings.  Renovations are common in the area and its status as an up-and-coming neighborhood near downtown has been only slightly deterred by the current real estate market.  Homes that have been recently renovated, especially the larger ones, command high values, while bargains remain among the homes that have seen too many years pass since their last update.

The Whittier Neighborhood has many active neighborhood groups and associations.  The Ford-Warren branch of the Denver Public Library serves as sort of a community hub providing not only library services to residents, but also the meeting rooms for the many groups.  One of the many Whittier Neighborhood groups puts on an annual community barbeque at the Whittier Community garden near Whittier Elementary School.

Another hub of activity in the Whittier Neighborhood is Fuller Park located just to the north of Manual High School.  The park is home to a playground and basketball court, and most popularly of all, one of Denver's all too rare off leash dog parks.  The dog park not only provides canine assisted introductions to fellow neighborhood residents but also attracts people from all over north Denver.

Attractive architecture, active community residents, and a host of local features make Whittier a great neighborhood, especially for those looking to find a good deal on a house with good "bones" and then putting some effort into restoring an old home to its original luster.
